As we prepare for opening, we would like to introduce our staff, Q&A style, to give you a little insight into what the South Lake Brewing Company team is all about. Each week we will share a quick interview with one of our employees.

We'll start off with Christopher Smith, the Co-Founder and Brew Master at South Lake Brewing Company.

What's your favorite brewery?

My favorite brewery is Firestone Walker because everything they create is totally on point. By having a game plan for each beer, Firestone pretty much hits a home-run with every brew. Their killer branding also really sticks out to me. I really like their Luponic Distortion, because it's pretty hoppy but balances well. The Luponic Distortion changes every ninety days, which shows that Firestone really plays with whatever new hops there are out there. My go-to, however, is their Pivo Pilsner, which is super easy to drink, very refreshing, and delicious.

What is your favorite type of beer?

My favorite type of beer would probably be a hoppy pale ale. This type of beer always tends to be delicious and refreshing, which is perfect for any occasion.

What sparked your interest in craft beer?

Well besides how awesome craft beer tastes and how many different types there are available, I really like the Craft Beer Community. Everyone is collaborative in the industry. Craft beer tends to bring people together to have a good time.

I love how it brings people, from all walks of life, to something that they all have in common, which is beer.

When did you move to Lake Tahoe?

My family and I moved to Tahoe when I was just five years old. I did leave Tahoe for college and to kickstart my career, but just recently moved back to Tahoe with my wife, Nicole, about a year and a half ago. So I've lived here for most of my life.

What's an extreme sport you like watching or participating in?

I love biking - both BMX and mountain biking. I've been BMXing for a long time now, mainly in skate parks and the street. I also grew up riding mountain bike trails around Tahoe, so since I moved back, I've really been getting back into that.

When you're not working, how do you typically take advantage of a nice day in Tahoe?

In the summer, we like to enjoy our mornings with a nice cup of coffee on the back deck. After that we'll to take our dog, Barley, out for a bike ride or hike, and then enjoy the rest of the day at the beach. And in the evenings, we like ending the day with a nice cold beer or two.

During the colder season, you can find my wife and I shredding the slopes.

Do you have a favorite lake around Tahoe and why?

Star Lake is pretty rad. The path to get there is truly beautiful. You have to cover some ground and climb way up there, away from civilization, to reach your destination. Though, you can't beat Lake Tahoe. The clarity of the lake is amazing, there are endless beaches to choose from, and it's easy to get to.

And finally, what excites you the most about South Lake Brewing Company?

There's a lot of things I'm excited for. I'm excited to be able to get the community of Tahoe stoked on a local beer that they can find anywhere in town.  That they feel there's a positive brand behind it, that truly wants to help the community. Like the saying, "survive and thrive," we hope to bring a brand the community knows and loves, as well as giving back, whether that's through community service, nonprofits, etc.

Stay tuned for Nicole's Q&A session at the end of the week.
