First Brew Day 5 Years in the Making

South Lake Brewing Company's first brew day! We brewed our Marlette Blonde - an easy drinking light ale with notes of honey and citrus. We waited for almost 5 years to brew our first professional craft beer and the day finally arrived! Read this blog post for a quick summary of the brewing process and to view pictures of the day.

Getting 'Er Done!

Today was an incredible day! We had a painting party at the brewery with the Tahoe Craft Beer Meetup community. As many as 20 people showed up throughout the afternoon to help us paint all the recently framed and drywalled walls. We are so so so very thankful for everyone that volunteered their time today!!!!! We could not say "Thank You" enough and are extremely grateful for our community and friends!

Here are a bunch of pictures of the painting party:

Getting a 7' 10" tall brewhouse through a 7' 11" tall door

Getting a 7' 10" tall brewhouse through a 7' 11" tall door

Last Friday, our brewhouse was delivered. The brewhouse is a 2-vessel, 10 barrel stainless steel beast that costs a pretty penny. If the brewhouse is dropped or scratched there goes $50K easily. Stressed yet? Yeah, so were we.

Luckily, Chris is a man of many talents. He's an engineer by trade, a brewer by passion, and a natural problem-solver. He took a forklift training class a few months ago and let's just say we are so very thankful he did.

With the morale support and direction of family, friends, and Ethan (our operations manager) - Chris was able to unload the brewhouse and other pieces of expensive equipment out of a huge 18-wheeler in the middle of a snowstorm. Once everything was unloaded, he carefully moved everything into the brewery.

By far the most stressful part of the day was having to remove some hardware from the mash tun so it could fit through our dock door. Even with the hardware removed, the mash tun was 7' 10" tall and the dock door was only 7' 11" tall! It was definitely a tight fit.

Chris and team saved the day and successfully moved all equipment into the brewery in less than 24 hours! Now with that problem solved it's time to move onto more construction... more posts to come shortly in the next few weeks!

Crafting a community

Crafting a community

Community.

In South Lake Tahoe, we have already experienced the emergence of community around craft beer. Just last Thursday, we celebrated the 2nd anniversary of the local craft beer meetup group. Over 150 people drank beer together to raise $2,400 for a local non-profit. It was an amazing night of new and old friends. An amazing night of love for craft beer. An amazing night of community.

Starting South Lake Brewing Company and the desire to create a community go hand-in-hand. A group of friends or even strangers coming together over shared passions is a beautiful thing.

However, creating a community is not an easy thing to do. It takes time, patience, and passion. We are starting The Bär Society as a catalyst to create a community. A community around a shared passion of craft beer and so much more in our small mountain town.

The Bär Society is not just a growler club. It’s the first group of passionate advocates for South Lake Brewing Company.  When you purchase an annual membership – you are not just purchasing a high-quality growler with a few other perks – you are helping start our brewery. The Bär Society members will be pioneers for craft beer in South Lake Tahoe.

1-year memberships for The Bär Society are now available for pre-order through our online store. As one of 125 members, you will receive a customized MiiR growler, an invitation to our exclusive The Bär Society party, discounts at the brewery, and much more.

We cannot wait to create The Bär Society and share our passions for Tahoe, craft beer, and SLBC with all of you! Cheers to the crafting of a community!
